ABOUT CAT SKIING IN COLORADO NORTH

Northern Colorado is one of the snowiest places in the U.S. It is home to some of the most scenic mountain views in this part of the country and is the ideal location for many outdoor winter activities including cat skiing.

Cat skiers who come to Northern Colorado choose to stay in resort municipalities like Aspen. Aspen is a small town of 6,000 and serves as the seat of Pitkin County. It gets its names from the plentiful aspen trees that grow in the area.

On average, Aspen receives around 136 inches of snow per year. The heavier snow accumulations arrive in November and linger until March or April. These months receive as much as 20 to 25 inches of snow.

All of that snow, however, typically comes down as dry powder, making the nearby mountains ideal for cat skiing. People who come here to cat ski typically select one of the guided excursions into the backcountry. Venturing off on one’s own can put a skier in peril by being caught in heavy snowfall and possible avalanches.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT CAT SKIING IN COLORADO NORTH

Cat skiers of all skill levels are welcome in Aspen. Intermediate skiers may feel more comfortable taking part in ski tours hosted by one of more than 1,200 guides who work in the area. These guides serve not only as instructors and advisers on the mountain, but also as concierges for skiers. They can even take skiers to their favorite spots on the mountain where people can get panoramic views of the area.

Ski packages are typically available in half day or full day options. Half day packages begin at around $600 and start at noon. Skiers and their guides wrap up their excursions between 2:30 and 3:30 in the afternoon.

Full day packages begin around $800 and start at 9:00 in the morning. Skiers and their guides stay out until 4:00 in the afternoon.

When cat skiers are not out in the backcountry, they can take part in other snow-related activities that occur in Aspen. These activities include cross country skiing, uphilling, ice skating, alpine coaster rides, snow biking, indoor wall climbing, powder tours, snowshoe tours, and après skiing.

Skiers have plenty of lodging accommodations to choose from, ranging from private homes, condos, and penthouses to hotel rooms and guest suites. Many of the rooms available in Aspen offer mountainside views and courtesies like concierge services, free Wi-Fi, gondola shuttle services, and in-room meals.

Traveling to and from Aspen requires some forethought, especially in the wintertime. The town’s only major thoroughfare, Highway 82, is sometimes shut down because of snowy weather. Skiers can also arrive by private or charter jet at Aspen-Pitkin County Airport which only has a single runway.

Another option is to take the bus service offered by the Roaring Fork Transportation Company or RFTA. It serves Aspen as well as the towns of Basalt, El Jebel, Carbondale, Rifle, and Glenwood Springs. People arriving by Amtrak into Glenwood can also take the RFTA into Aspen.
