ABOUT CAT SKIING IN MONTANA
The Revelstoke, Montana area is home to some of the best cat skiing terrain in the country. Thousands of skiers visit each year to try their hand at cat skiing in the Bad Shot Mountain Range of the Selkirks.
This part of Montana receives on average 600 inches of snow each year, making it an amazing spot for extreme cat skiing. The terrain here features impressively steep chutes, spread over wide open mountain faces, and powder-filled bowls. Skiers who come here find some of the best turns and deepest powder in the country.
To accommodate the influx of cat skiers to the mountains each year, Great Northern has invested in four snow cats to take skiers to the top of two mountains they will ski on exclusively. The snow cats are Pisten Bullies and include a 600, 400 Edge, and two 300’s named Delta and Beta. The variety of snow cats can accommodate either multi-day or single day skiers.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT CAT SKIING IN MONTANA
Rides in a snow cat to the summit typically take around 15 to 20 minutes. During the time, cat skiers can warm up, enjoy a homemade snack, and share powder stories with their fellow skiers. They never have to worry about loading or unloading their gear. This task is handled by the resort’s staff.
Every cat skiing party is paired with at least two experienced and certified guides. The guides are certified and trained in avalanche and backcountry safety. They are also professional members of the avalanche association.
Before heading out to the backcountry for a day of cat skiing, skiers are required to sign a liability waiver. They are given a comprehensive rundown of avalanche and backcountry safety and given safety gear to use like trans-receivers, backpacks, probes, and shovels. Skiers are also briefed on the weather and avalanche conditions.
People coming to Montana for cat skiing are advised to bring along safety gear of their own. These items should include layers of clothing to wear outdoors, goggles, anti-fog spray, bib, snow pants, snow or ski boots, jackets with powder skirts, skis and poles, a helmet, and at least two pairs of gloves or mittens. Skiers should bring the appropriate attire if they plan on using the sauna.
When they are not out on the mountain, guests can relax and warm up at their lodge. Lodge accommodations include a lounge area, double or single rooms with single or double beds, a full private bathroom, hair dryer, and clean linens. Wi-Fi is also available for people who need to stay connected to work or home. Meals are served and enjoyed family style.
